wrench_and_rufflesCharacter History: http://firefly.wikia.com/wiki/Kaywinnit_Lee_FryePrevious Game History: Kaylee was in Mayfield for just over a year. Her initial impressions largely focused on frustration with the gender roles completely out of sorts with the science fiction world she was used to, specifically the fact that the hardware store wouldn't sell her tools and the bar wouldn't serve her alcohol.
She started to bond with Rupert Giles, who assured her there were no Reavers in Mayfield. It was, of course, a matter of weeks before creatures that essentially
were Reavers showed up. This led her to be very focused on being better prepared in the future and when the town experienced extended power difficulties in the dead of winter, she was able to help by cobbling together small heaters and generators.
Kaylee generally made herself useful to her fellow residents by helping with any mechanical issue that came up along the way. It was around this time that Kaylee met an idealistic young man with great talk of saving anyone. She found him to be particularly cute when he blushed. Through the intervention of Valentine's Day flowers, Luke found himself unable to confess his feelings and the two began to date.
It was also around this time that Giles received an assortment of weapons and began teaching Kaylee basic self defense. With a sword. While she remains a reluctant combatant, she is a bit more capable of defending herself than she would be from her canonpoint alone.
After this, Kaylee continued helping with mechanical issues, brewing moonshine and attempting to navigate the complex dynamics of the SKywalker clan. She was also assigned work as a waitress, which she wouldn't have minded terribly if it weren't for the whole part where the job
wasn't mechanic. She did like getting to talk to lots of people, including a cheery conversation about milkshakes with Darth Vader.
Kaylee is capable of having a cheery conversation with Darth Vader.
At one point there were body swap shenanigans. This probably should have been a sign (more on that later...). In this time, Kaylee joined the ranks of people who have kissed LUke's sister.
Mayfield's prom led to a lecture from Obi-Wan Kenobi about how the Jedi Code forbids relationships. Kaylee is not a fan of the Jedi Code.
Over the course of the summer, Mayfield's stability began to degrade greatly. It seemed like a machine malfunctioning, but without access to any of the workings, Kaylee was unable to fix anything. Which, needless to say, she found rather frustrating.
After the town's original controller was defeated, he revealed that all the town's residents were data copied from the originals. While the majority of the townsfolk had long suspected that Mayfield itself was a simulation, the revelation that they were as well came as somewhat of a shock. Though in retrospect the bodyswap suddenly made sense.
In the end, there was little time for contemplating the issue as Mayfield itself began to go to hell. As Kaylee squeezed into a rather crowded speeder, she realized that she wanted to live. And that was good enough. So when she arrived in a new town full of possibilities, she focused on building, not contemplating herself.
Of course, all of this will mean that when she wakes up on the ship, she's going to assume that she somehow got downloaded to the wrong location.
Major Previous CRRupert Giles: Kaylee reminded Giles a bit of Buffy and brought out his protective instincts. They weathered several major events together and he taught her some basic self defense.
Luke Skywalker: Kaylee's boyfriend in her time in Mayfield. She's utterly charmed by all his dashing heroics.
Mara Jade Skywalker: A few months after she started seeing Luke, Luke's future wife showed up in town. It was every bit as awkward as it sounds.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: The bulk of Kaylee's interactions with Obi-Wan consisted of him being a buzzkill and her lecturing him about love.
Picky Minch: Picky was Kaylee's assigned son in Mayfield. She found the situation a bit absurd, but was very fond of the boy. The relationship they eventually developed was more "cool older sister" than "mom".
Ruri Hoshino: Ruri hired Kaylee to work on her grounded spacheship. Which is basically the quickest way to Kaylee's heart.
Personality: Kaylee is generally a very cheery young woman. She has a smile that can brighten a room and a strong desire to make sure she does. She's always eager to make friends and spend time with old ones. Despite being embroiled in the world of smuggling, she has managed to keep a certain innocence, manifesting largely as a tendency to look for the best in people she meets. She just can't get her head around why some of the nastier characters she has come across insist on acting the way they do. I must reiterate that she is capable of having a pleasant conversation with Darth Vader.
As the rest of the crew does their best to shield Kaylee from the worst of the world they move in, Kaylee is a reluctant combatant. Even with the best of intention, she has been known to freeze when required to fire on other people. However, in her time in Mayfield she learned more self defense and had to get by without the majority of the crew. She will never be a
fighter, but is much less likely to freeze up in a firefight.
Her innocence does not extend to matters of sex. She is quite upfront about that topic and isn't afraid to make her desires known. Except if the object of those desires isn't quite comfortable with the idea, but this has not exactly been an issue since she started dating Luke. In that situation she'll be very frank with her friends. This trait is not restricted solely to matters of sex. She tends to be very straight with the truth in such matters as the plan for the day being crime. This honesty does not, however, extend to being honest to the point of cruelty. She is well aware of the delicate balance between being open with people and being tactful.
She has an absolute passion for machinery which is well served by her mechanical talents. She intuitively understands mechanical systems and can readily spot a problem and fix it with limited resources. She claims that machines just speak to her. This resourcefulness also extends beyond purely mechanical matters.
Perhaps due to her talents, she has almost a compulsion to fix both things and people. She can hardly stop herself from tinkering with a machine she knows could be working better. And if presented with something broken that she can't manage to fix she will take it very personally and blame herself for any hardship that comes from her inability to fix it. It's one of the few situations that can leave her genuinely morose. Similarly, she also takes it on herself to try to smooth over disagreements between those closest to her. All she wants is for everyone to get along and she finds it incredibly upsetting when she can't get that to happen.
While she is happiest when she is up to her elbows in grease and gears, she also adores traditional "girly" things. She has a huge weakness for incredibly impractical frilly dresses and the colour pink. This is a side that she only rarely gets to indulge on Serenity, but this only makes the desires even stronger. Coupled to this is her tendency to decorate Serenity in an effort to make it more homey.
Kaylee has a passion for good food. It's pretty hard to keep her from a buffet table, especially if there are sweets or strawberries. She tries her best to prepare good meals even with the limited resources possible on a spaceship, the most notable being an effort to make cake out of mostly protein. While she did not enjoy everything about Mayfield, she did quite like having access to exotic ingredients like flour and sugar.
Powers/Abilities: Kaylee is an extremely gifted mechanic, having stated that machines seem to talk to her. She is quick to grasp the intricacies of new machinery and can find more efficient approaches than factory standard. She is also used to keeping
Serenity in the sky with extremely limited resources and is thus quit accustomed to improvising.
She in theory can use a pistol, but is by no means an expert marksman. She also has some basic familiarity with bladed weapons that she can employ in a pinch.
Possessions: Mechanic's coveralls with several cute patches. Wrench, ratchet, and screwdriver tucked into the pockets.

She still wasn't sure about using it, but those hazmats were definitely dangerous. And Giles hadn't given her those lessons for nothing. If ever there was a time to use them, it was this. Whatever Zemeckis had said about them not being real... she wasn't ready to go yet. Not without a fight.
And then there was a new sound outside and Luke called out, “They're here, hurry!”
If things weren't quite so bad, Kaylee would have admired the dashing heroics as Luke held off the hazmats. But this was life or death, so she scrambled into the speeder, with Luke not far behind. Apparently this hadn`t been the first stop, because there were an awful lot of other people already in the back seat.
Cozy. She could handle that. Luke's sister was doing most of the fighting up front, but she didn't recognize the others. It looked like that'd have to change real quick though. She settled in half on Luke's lap and leaning up against the dignified looking gentleman. She might have to shift over even more if it got really hairy and Luke had to join in on the fighting. She knew he wouldn't hesitate to step in. That was what made him Luke.
So introductions were probably in order. She'd met people under more awkward circumstances. So she just smiled. “Hi, I'm Kaylee.”
With a very brief warning from the pilot, they were underway. Dammit, they were going to
